SCANNING THE NAVE WITH THE MATTERPORT PRO 2

Weston Media were approached by Westminster Cathedral after they had seen our work with St. Michael’s Church in Offham, Kent. We worked directly with the Cathedral to produce this stunning 3D Tour of the Cathedral in its entirety, combining Matterport Pro 2 and BLK360 scanning systems to capture the stunning architecture and imagery of the space.

Westminster Cathedral is the 50th largest in the world and the largest Catholic Church in the United Kingdom, with an interior layout of over 60,000SQFT across multiple floors, Weston Media were put to task to carefully plan the capture of the space as required, to carefully plan the capture of the space as required. With two days required for filming to take place within the central nave, alternative arrangements were made for the Cathedral’s regular daily worship to continue uninterrupted. Other areas, such as the upper galleries, the Crypt, Sacristy and the tower were captured over several days, ensuring that every possible location was well covered and photographed, allowing us to produce a much more complete 3D Model of the Cathedral.

Capture was completed over a series of weeks, starting out at the Cathedral’s Crypt as a trial for imagery and dollhouse capture, before moving to the primary shoot.

Westminster Cathedral is an important religious and spiritual site, not only for Londoners but for people throughout the world. This is reinforced by the grand scale of the building and its Byzantine architecture. It was important to capture this in the ‘3D Dolls House’ component of the Matterport tour, by scanning other areas of the Cathedral not publicly viewable, as well as the 85m clocktower, scanning to the very top and out onto a ledge at the highest point. With unparalleled access, we have captured areas of the Cathedral usually inaccessible to the public such as St. Edwards Bell, the Grand Organ and the Crypt Chapels.

Combining Matterport with overlay software Treedis, we were able to incorporate 360 degree drone photography into the tour and video content for the Cathedral’s new website in partnership with Cloud Visual & Oink Creative giving viewers of the tour amazing views over the Cathedral and City.

The main purpose of the tour was to create a record and marketing device for the space, allowing visitors from around the world who may not otherwise be able to visit, virtually explore the space in unique detail. An added benefit from the tour has been for the Cathedral’s conservation team who are able to look over the space remotely, and have a snapshot from this time.

Following on from the 3D Tour & Model we created for the Cathedral, we were appointed to carry out measured survey work & rectified photographic survey work combining photography with laser scan data. Find out more about these services here.
